Serious crime aimed at tourists is rare. However, as with any crowded area, beware of pickpockets. Put valuables and passports in the hotel safe and make sure wallets, cameras and handbags are securely fastened and as out of sight as possible.

Shopping

Italy is a shopper's heaven. Luxury goods such as jewellery, clothes, luggage and accessories can be found in Milan, Rome, Venice and Florence. Delicacies such

as cheese, salami, parma ham, olive oil and wine are widely available – as well as the famous Italian espresso.

Clothing

If travelling in northern Italy in winter you'll need boots and a heavy coat. In the south, lighter clothing is adequate. During spring and late autumn, bring light- to medium-weight clothing and rainwear in case of showers.

Summer evenings can be cool so pack a jacket or wrap. Remember that Italy’s churches are places of worship as well as works of art and architecture - dress respectfully if you intend to visit.
