Fiji Weather

The islands of Fiji enjoy a typical tropical climate throughout the year with high temperatures and humidity the norm. Fiji has, on average, around six to eight hours of sunshine a day with fairly consistent temperatures throughout the year. You would be very unlucky to experience more than a few hours of rain in a day even during the wet season, which runs from late December to mid March.

The population of around 750,000 lives largely on the two main islands, Viti Levu (Great Fiji) and Vanua Levu. Nowadays the islands are an ethnic melting pot ranging from Melanesians to Polynesians and Indians. There is also a smattering of Europeans and some Chinese.

Fiji is mountainous and lushly forested. The main islands, islands each encircled by spectacular coral reefs and lagoons. Fiji offers visitors the freedom of uncrowded places, it is an eco-tourism destination and a nature lover’s delight where you can see waterfalls, beautiful landscape and exceptional flora and fauna. Fiji has countless miles of coral reefs and breathtaking underwater experiences and offers an unparalleled range of quality dive sites. Numerous watersports are available such as sailing, surfing, windsurfing and diving.

Language

English is the official language, Fijian dialects are spoken by the indigenous Fijian and the Indian community speak Fiji-Hindu.

Currency

Fijian Dollar. Travellers Cheques and all major credit cards are widely accepted. Rate of exchange F$2.44 = UK£1 (24th June 10).

Safety

As in most countries, it is wise to take precautions against theft, especially in big cities. Keep valuables such as expensive jewellery in the hotel safety deposit box.

Transport

There are many different forms of travel within Fiji, they are as follows:

Internal flights - The most expensive way to travel between islands is by plane and there are many domestic operators servicing all of the island groups.

Ferries are inexpensive, frequent, reliable and very sea worthy and mixing with the local people while travelling between islands is an interesting part of the Fiji experience.

Bus - the larger islands have good bus networks and outside the towns you can often just hail down a bus wherever you see one.
