DAY 1
Say goodbye to the Pacific Ocean and Australia’s beautiful, vibrant East Coast as the Indian Pacific trundles out of historic Sydney mid-afternoon. Ahead of you is a journey of some 2,700 miles, a distance roughly equivalent of London to Tehran. Not far out of Sydney, the train will enter rural New South Wales and overnight cross into Outback country.

DAY 2
Arriving early into the historic mining town of Broken Hill, stop for a couple of hours to partake in a ‘Whistle Stop’ tour of the town, visiting Junction Mine, birthplace of mining giant BHP, see the impressive Miner’s Memorial and the town’s heritage buildings. Re-board the train crossing into South Australia and on to Adelaide, arriving late afternoon. Optional ‘Whistle Stop’ tour of the city or the central markets, walking tour or visit to the National Wine Centre or Adelaide Zoo. Perhaps break your journey with a few days exploring the city, Kangaroo Island and the Barossa Valley. Passengers from Adelaide board here and the train will depart again this evening, heading out into Australia’s vast terrain.

DAY 3
The longest stretch of the journey will take you across the Outback and to the treeless plains of The Nullarbor. Along the way, traverse the world’s longest continuously straight stretch of railway track at nearly 300 miles in length. The train will make a stop at isolated Cook where passengers can explore the remains of this once thriving town, now largely abandoned and with a population of just four! Along the way are opportunities to spot fascinating wildlife. The train then continues to historic Kalgoorlie, Australia’s gold mining capital, famous for its pubs and brothels. There is time for a final ‘Whistle Stop’ tour, taking in sights that include the huge ‘Superpit’ Goldmine and many heritage buildings. Depart later that night.

DAY 4
The Indian Pacific arrives mid-morning in Perth, alongside the beautiful Swan River and just a few miles upriver from the Indian Ocean.

NB - This journey is also available in reverse.
