KUONI INSIDER

Julien Bordet
Purchasing, Japan

Japan is the perfect destination if, like me, you enjoy visiting a busy, fashionable city like Tokyo for shopping, followed by somewhere traditional, like Mount Koya; a spiritual place populated by monks and beautiful temples, that is perfect for embracing local culture."

Japan Snapshot

A gentle breeze rustles through the canopy of candyfloss above, sending petals fluttering from the cherry trees in a shower of confetti. Follow a winding path carpeted with a blanket of blossom across the graceful curve of a stone bridge. Pass a tranquil pond shimmering with koi fish swimming lazily in the hazy morning sun and breathe in the sweet fragrance of the delicate blossom.

Japan holidays

An intoxicating country of contrasts

Japan's unique culture makes it a fascinating holiday destination. From the modern, high-tech capital of Tokyo to the ancient imperial city of Kyoto, this rich country has something for everyone. Mount Fuji is an impressive sight, along with the historic Buddha statues and temples in the region.

Stay in
Tokyo or visit former capital Kyoto, where you'll find traditional Japanese crafts and plenty of sightseeing. In Japan extras can be expensive, but it's worth it to see all the fascinating sights.

Japan holiday highlights
•   Enjoy Tokyo's dazzling attractions, from Akihabara's hundreds of electrical shops to the famous Ysukiji fish market and Imperial Palace.
•   Visit
Kyoto, Japan's former capital until 1867. This cultural gem is riddled with temples, castles and museums - including Nijo Castle, dating from 1603, which is a designated national treasure for its splendid architecture and interior decoration.
•   Book our
Ryokan Experience and spend the night in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn, for an authentic taste of the country's culture.

Japan - The Essentials
•   Avoid using mobile phones on public transport.
•   Remove your shoes before entering temples, shrines and homes.
•   Shower before entering public bathing areas.
•   Avoid sticking your chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice or passing food from your chopsticks to somebody else’s.

Random Fact
Originally performed during 9th Century religious rituals, Chado, or the ‘way of tea’, was developed in the 16th Century by tea master Sen-no-Rikyu as a path to achieving ‘wabi’, a calm and Zen-like state of mind. It is now considered an art form in Japan and a series of carefully choreographed movements performed with grace and elegance can take years to perfect.

Japan honeymoons
All of our Japan hotels make for fabulous honeymoon settings. See ancient sights, tour bustling cities and tuck into sumptuous fresh sushi. You could even spend a romantic night in a traditional Japanese inn with our Ryokan Experience.
