Ryokan Experience

Stay in a traditional Japanese inn

A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn from the Edo period (1603-1868) and was originally established to serve travellers along Japan’s highways. Nowadays these charming dwellings allow travellers from all over the world to sample a unique taste of authentic Japanese life.

Each ryokan is constructed using centuries-old Japanese methods, with tatami (straw mat flooring), futon bedding and rice paper sliding doors. Our Ryokan Experience can be added into any tailor made itinerary, usually for one or two nights.

Japan - The Essentials

•   Avoid sticking your chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice or passing food from your chopsticks to somebody else’s.

Random Fact
Originally performed during 9th Century religious rituals, Chado, or the ‘way of tea’, was developed in the 16th Century by tea master Sen-no-Rikyu as a path to achieving ‘wabi’, a calm and Zen-like state of mind. It is now considered an art form in Japan and a series of carefully choreographed movements performed with grace and elegance can take years to perfect.
