Periyar National Park is nestled in the mountains of the Western Ghats between the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Surrounding a lake and sweeping across 300 square miles of grassland, hilly forest and marshland, the reserve is home to an abundance of wildlife and is famous for its large number of elephants. The wildlife sanctuary is also a haven to the rare lion-tailed macaque, tiger, bison, wild boar, flying squirrel, sambar deer and mongoose. Colourful butterflies, lizards, snakes and a number of endemic bird species including the blue-winged parakeet and crimson-throated barbet can also be spotted in this charming reserve.
