My impressions of Delhi were exotic and chaotic; frantic and calm; old and new. An invisible line separates New and Old Delhi with Old Delhi dominated by the 17th Century Red Fort. Time has reduced its splendour, but explore the Fort and surrounding streets and bazaars and you'll find a true feel of the mogul era."

Delhi Snapshot

Eyes sting at the sunlight and skin itches with the heat, nostrils flare at smells and ears hum to the noise - the whole body intoxicated with sensation. Chaos, excitement and congestion. People, animals and produce. Unfamiliar, invigorating and enthralling. Chandni Chowk, Delhi’s oldest market, overwhelms your senses.

Delhi holidays

Delhi is the vast and bustling capital of India and at over 5,000 years old is one of the oldest cities in the world. It makes up part of the Golden Triangle along with Agra and Jaipur.  This exciting city of contrasts encompasses two very different parts - Old Delhi and New Delhi - and both can be amalgamated quite easily whilst sightseeing.

Enveloped by ancient crumbling walls, Old Delhi is the city of the Moghuls, dating back to the 17th century and still largely Muslim. Teeming with medieval bazaars and overflowing with Indian mansions and rickshaws, the sights of include Asia’s largest spice market, India’s largest mosque and an array of temples.

To the south lies the tree-lined avenues of British built New Delhi, constructed by British architect Edwin Lutyens.  From the retail hub of Connaught Place to the flow of imperial architecture and the commemorative India Gate, New Delhi gives a fascinating insight into the last 100 years of India’s history.

Delhi Holiday Highlights
•  The magnificent Red Fort in Old Delhi is a fine example of Mughal architecture and grandeur and a spectacular reminder of its former glory.

•   Visit the largest mosque in India, Jama Masjid. Five distinct storeys of sandstone and marble complete with elaborate carvings and inscribed with verses from the holy Koran.

•   Visit the Gandhi Memorial Site and Presidents Palace in New Delhi.

•   India Gate was built in memorial of soldiers who lost their lives during World War 1, the North-West Frontier and Third Afghan War. An eternal flame burns for those who died in the 1971 Indian-Pakistan War.

•   Add our classic North India
Taj Tour to your holiday, which covers the principal attractions of Delhi, Jaipur and Agra.
