DAY 1 - LONDON TO MARANGU Kenya Airways overnight flight from Heathrow to Kilimanjaro via Nairobi.
DAY 2 - MARANGU On arrival transfer to the nearby Springlands Hotel, named after the local freshwater springs fed by the rain and melting snow of Kilimanjaro. Prepare for the days ahead with a climb briefing, followed by dinner. Spend tonight in a spacious room with twin beds, mosquito net, fan and en-suite bathroom with hot shower.
DAY 3 - MARANGU TO MOUNT KILIMANJARO After breakfast, register at the National Park. Transfer to the start of the Rongai Route in the village of Nale Moru and begin on a small path winding through farmed fields and pine forest. The track climbs consistently but gently through a forest that shelters beautiful Colobus monkeys - distinctive due to their 'cape' of white hair and flowing white tail. Camp is made at 8,530 feet at the edge of the moorland with extensive views over the Kenyan plains (3-4 hours walking).
DAY 4 - MOUNT KILIMANJARO A steady ascent up to the ‘Second Cave’ today with superb views of the icefields on the crater rim. After lunch leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. Camp is in a sheltered valley near Kikelewa Caves (11,811 feet, 6-7 hours walking).
DAY 5 - MOUNT KILIMANJARO A short but steep climb is rewarded by superb views and a sense of total wilderness. The next camp at Mawenzi Tarn (14,200 feet) is spectacularly situated beneath towering spires. Afternoon at leisure to rest or explore the surrounding area and acclimatise (3-4 hours walking).
DAY 6 - MOUNT KILIMANJARO The lunar desert between Mawenzi and Kibo is crossed today to reach School Campsite (15,600 feet) at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall (5-6 hours walking). The rest of the day is spent resting and a very early night beckons in preparation for the final ascent.
DAY 7 - MOUNT KILIMANJARO The final day begins by torchlight at around 1am. This is the steepest and most demanding part of the climb, along a switchback trail heading for the crater rim and Gillman’s Point (18,650 feet). Here there is time to rest and to enjoy the spectacular sunrise - a special moment. Those still strong enough can make the three hour round trip to Uhuru Peak (19,350 feet) passing close to the glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Kibo is surprisingly fast and after some refreshments continue the descent to reach the final camp at Horombo (12,200 feet, 11-15 hours walking).
DAY 8 - MOUNT KILMANAJRO TO MARANGU A steady descent through moorland to Mandara Hut then through lush forest on a good path to the National Park gate (5-6 hours walking). Transfer back to the Springlands Hotel for dinner and overnight.
DAY 9 - MARANGU TO LONDON Drive to Arusha for lunch, then fly Kenya Airways via Nairobi overnight to Heathrow.
ZANZIBAR REF AK808
DAY 9 After lunch fly Zanair to the beautiful island of Zanzibar - a beach extension is the ideal and well-deserved end to this inspirational climb. Spend four or more nights at the four star Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort in a Superior room.
DAY 13 Kenya Airways overnight flight to Heathrow via Nairobi.
