Destination introduction

The region sweeps eastwards along the coast of the Cape, running from Mossel Bay to Port Elizabeth. See pristine beaches along the rugged coastline flanked by dense forests, mountain ranges and wild flowers. Discover charming towns and villages and enjoy fantastic hospitality. This journey has been inspiring travellers, artists and writers for generations and is certain to give you memories to last a lifetime.

This is probably one of the most famous and popular journeys which you can make in the Southern Hemisphere. Whether you choose coach travel or the freedom of self drive you are certain to find the landscapes inspirational and of awesome natural beauty. This is very much an African ‘garden’ experience so don’t expect immaculate lawns and regimented flowers, but do be prepared for a fantastic mixture of dense forests, mighty rivers, valleys, lakes and some of the most spectacular bird life. Many of the hotels along the way really are true gems and we will be happy to help with advice and recommendations.

Garden Route holiday highlights

•  Friendly George, spectacularly located in the shadow of the Outeniqua Mountains, makes an ideal base for exploring the area's natural wonders, with access to miles of walking and cycling trails.

•  Plettenburg Bay is a happy collision of sweeping golden beaches, stunning lagoons and ancient forests on the Indian Ocean coast.

•  Mossel Bay is a seaside town roughly half way between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, set on a dramatic peninsula, marking the location of the first meeting between African and European people.

•  Knysna, a town buzzing with creative energy, the place to buy your Garden Route souvenirs. Set amid lush forest, shimmering lakes and glorious beaches, it is a magnet for the nature lover.
