Lion Sands Private Game Reserve

World class game-rich safari experience

Ideal for a luxurious fly-in safari, Lion Sands Private Game Reserve sits in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, bordering the Sabie river, and offers a superior safari experience in one of the most game-rich areas of Africa.

Choose from three superb lodges, each with its own distinct character. The River Lodge has two pools, lounge/bar, dining deck, a peaceful riverside deck and bar, health spa, gym and open-air Boma. Ivory Lodge, just upstream, is sophisticated and exclusive, with a stunning river frontage, lounge, wine cellar and use of River Lodge facilities. All Inclusive is available at both River Lodge and Ivory Lodge. On request for private use, Lion Sands 1933 has four en suite bedrooms with kids' room for up to eight children, lounge, pool and dedicated ranger, safari vehicle and private chef.

River Lodge 4.5* ALL INCLUSIVE
The River Lodge has two pools, lounge/bar, dining deck, a peaceful riverside deck and bar, health spa, gym and open-air boma.
20 rooms have airconditioning, kingsize bed, bathroom with shower, minibar and viewing deck. Superior rooms also feature an outdoor shower.

Ivory Lodge 4.5* ALL INCLUSIVE
Ivory Lodge, just upstream of River Lodge, is sophisticated and exclusive, with a stunning river frontage, lounge, wine cellar and use of River Lodge facilities.
Six suites are simply stunning featuring lounge with fireplace and bar, courtyard, private plunge pool with viewing deck, large airconditioned bedroom, kingsize bed, open plan bathroom with freestanding bath and indoor and outdoor showers.

1933 Lodge
On request for private use, 1933 Lodge has four en-suite bedrooms with kids' room for up to eight children, lounge, pool and dedicated ranger, safari vehicle and private chef.

Destination introduction

The Kruger National Park covers an area of 18,989 square kilometres and houses up to approximately 147 species of mammal, 517 species of bird and 114 species of reptile. It has 9 main gates that allow entrance to the different camps and is also a UNESCO designated area.

All of the Big Five can be found at Kruger National Park, so it is ideal for those looking for big game but due to it’s range of eco-systems, it is has a great level of diversity in both flora and fauna you can find anywhere else and is home to roughly 1,982 species of plant.


Kruger has a subtropical climate so the best time for observing wildlife is in the dry winter season when vegetation is sparse and the animals congregate at waterholes to drink. The end of November and early December is the birthing period so the park is filled with baby animals. Summer is the rainy season so everything springs into bloom and the park look lush and dense. However, this does make it harder to locate animals as the rivers and undergrowth is full. Autumn is the least popular time of year for spotting big game but is great for those looking to enjoy some bird spotting.
