Samburu & Meru

Rare wildlife and unique safari experiences

In Kenya's dry north, Samburu National Reserve offers a unique safari experience for wildlife lovers. Its arid landscape is home to 'dry country' animals rarely found outside the park, including the long-necked gerenuk - a rare gazelle. Leopard, cheetah and lion can all be found here - Elsa the lioness, whose story was made famous in the film 'Born Free', was raised in this region. With Kuoni, stay in charming lodges and intimate camps, explore Samburu’s lava plain and admire the game attracted by the beautiful Uaso Nyiro River.

South of Samburu lies the little-visited and unspoilt Meru National Park - a true wilderness dominated by huge baobab trees and the historic home of Elsa the lioness. It was here that Joy and George Adamson returned Elsa to the wild, and the location of the exclusive Elsa’s Kopje lodge.

Samburu highlights
•   Keep an eye out for the long-necked gerenuk, endangered Grevy’s zebras and reticulated giraffes – all unique to the game reserve
•   Head to the Uaso Nyiro River, where the refreshing waters attract wildlife including giraffe, elephant and zebra
•   Ornothologists will be delighted at the reserve's bird life - its landscape is home to over 350 species of bird, from the Verreaux's eagle and the Somali ostrich
