Highlights of Sharm el Sheikh holidays

•   The diving - Ras Mohammed Marine Park where large quantities of plankton support an extraordinary reef ecosystem, is justly renowned, but Shark Reef and Yolanda Reef constitute other 'must-dive' areas and the Straits of Tiran offer fine wreck and drift diving opportunities.
•   The enchanting 6th Century Monastery of St Catherine, at the foot of Mount Sinai (which may be climbed for sensational sunrise views) and on the site of the Burning Bush, through which God spoke to Moses.

Highlights

Marine life
The Red Sea is teeming with vibrant marine life – butterfly, grouper and napoleon fish, rainbow wrasse, moray eels, turtles and black-tip sharks. You can see these stunning creatures up close on a dive or at the local aquarium. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a pod of wild dolphins off the coast. And watch out for the deadly stone fish!

Bird-watching
The Red Sea coast is a migration route for many birds flocking through from Europe. From August to December, keep your eyes peeled for raptors, cranes and white storks.

Beaches

•   Few beaches are public. Most belong to the hotels, and are found on each bay with small sections available to all.
•   Beaches are sandty and gently sloping, and hotel beaches are protected by coral reefs. Entry into the sea is via a jetty.

Passports and Visas

•   You’ll need a full valid EU passport, and the expiry date should be at least 6 months after your arrival back in the UK.
•   Brits also need a visa to enter Egypt, which you can get before you leave from: The Consulate General of The Arab Republic of Egypt (2 Lowndes Street, London, SW1X 9ET; 020 7493 5285).

History

This one-time small fishing village is now Egypt's most prestigious seaside resort. The centre of Na'ama Bay is a magnet for international hotel brands, while the incredible and diverse marine life makes Sharm El Sheikh a world-renowned diver's utopia.

Clothing

•   Egypt is predominately a Muslim country, so make sure you’re properly dressed when out and about. Revealing outfits are a no-no, especially for women.
•   Pack lightweight cotton clothes in the summer and a jumper or jacket for cooler winter evenings.

Excursions

Giftun Island
This island is reachable by motorboat. Book a trip here and snorkel among stunning corals, swim and sunbathe.

Desert safari
Embark on a quad or jeep safari through the desert, home of traditional Bedouin tribes. You might even get the chance to go on a camel ride once you arrive at your camp.

Tipping

Tipping or ‘baksheesh’ is a way of life in Egypt and it’s customary to tip about LE£1 for every little service, so keep a pocketful of small change!
