Destination introduction

Often dubbed ‘the world's greatest open air museum’, Luxor's greatest exhibits are the ruins of the Karnak and Luxor temple complexes. On the opposite banks of the Nile lie monuments, temples and tombs. The West Bank's attractions include the Valleys of the Kings and Queens.

Luxor is a great base for touring Upper Egypt - stay here before or after a
Nile cruise and absorb the area's staggering history.

Holidays to Luxor highlights

•   The extraordinary, monumental temples of the East Bank, particularly Luxor Temple and Karnak, a breathtaking architectural achievement to rival the Pyramids in scale and ambition.
•   The royal necropolis of the West  Bank, including the Tomb of Tutankhamun and the Tomb of Nefertari, still as vibrantly colourful as it was when painted over 3000 years ago.
•   The peaceful Ramesseum, where the colossal broken statues inspired Shelley's splendid poem Ozymandias.
•   The tiny, superb and air-conditioned Luxor Museum, with interesting and well-chosen displays of finds.
•   Afternoon tea at the grand deluxe Winter Palace Hotel, for that Agatha Christie touch.
