An exotic colourful region of jungle clad hills, mighty rivers, magnificent temples and fascinating hilltribe villages.

This region has some of the best shopping in Thailand and is renowned for its skilled craftsmen. Chiang Mai's famous night market in particular has plenty of good shopping.

Chiang Mai holiday highlights

•Enjoy the Festival of Lights in Chiang Mai and watch as locals set adrift floating candles and incense down the Mae Ping River. Stand side by side with locals and cheer on the bamboo raft races and spectacular firework displays that light up the sky.

•Visit Wat Chiang Man, the oldest Buddhist temple in the entire city.

•See Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep temple on Doi Suthep hill. Dating from 1383, its position was allegedly chosen after builders placed a statue of Buddha on an elephants back and set it free. On the site where Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep now stands, the elephant trumpeted, circled then lay down and died, which was seen as a message to build there.

Culture

The second largest city of Thailand, Chiang Mai is home to some 200 Buddhist temples. The largest and most important is the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, located in the mountains above the town. But even within the city limits there are temples in various corners and squares. Chiang Mai is the center of Thai handicrafts. Wood processing, textile crafts and industries are important to the region, especially the production of jade jewellery. The night bazaar in the city center offers a wide selection of these products.

Transport

The typical, three-wheeled tuk tuks in Chiang Mai are still very common. The fare must be negotiated in advance. Further, in Chiang Mai even bicycle rickshaws, not only for tourists, but especially for older residents, a very popular form of transport.

Shopping

Chiang Mai is the center of arts and crafts. Many of these workshops are just a short drive outside the city, such as wood carvings, silver and silk mills. The well-known subjects and umbrellas are manufactured here and artistically painted. All these products can also be found at the night market.

Entertainment

• The Riverside Bar and Restaurant situated on the banks of the Ping  River. Dinner cruises are very popular, reservations are almost always necessary

• Old Chiang Mai Cultural  Center: A combination of traditional Thai dinner and dance shows
