Aguas Claras, Puerto Viejo de Limon

Juicy jungle escape in Puerto Viejo

A few barefoot skips from stunning forest-hemmed beaches, eco-friendly Aguas Claras is a calm and cool hideaway on Costa Rica's southern Caribbean coast.

Owned by a mother-daughter artistic duo, Aguas Claras is tuned in to what guests want from a boho bolthole. A swim surrounded by swathes of tropical plants. Fresh-from-the-sea fish at a mid-century designed restaurant. Sun salutations on the shala and bicycles and snorkelling gear loaned out for free. Slink from golden sands to wild waves before slipping back to individually curated art-filled rooms.

Both the restaurant and beach bar focus on clean, local ingredients sourced from Puerto Viejo’s farms and fishermen. DaLime’s easygoing Carribean eats and cocktails are just steps from the beach whilst a stroll along the jungle path takes you to Papaya, serving everything from American breakfasts and seasonal fruit platters to red snapper and fresh pasta.

Papaya Restaurant
Pink, orange and peppermint-hued Papaya’s mid-century modern style is inspired by Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic. Come here for lunchtime smoothie bowls, raw, minimally prepared seafood, catch-of-the day dinners, and of course, to try their homemade hot Caribbean sauce.

DaLime Beach Club
Jungle-shaded DaLime features a fun menu of light bites right by Chiquita beach. Cool off with ice cream cups and fuel up with tuna bowls and chicken fingers to a soundtrack of tropical birds. Dine on the verandah, order cocktails straight to your sun lounger and look out for regular reggae and bonfire nights.

What's included

Breakfast at Papaya Restaurant.

The hotel’s holistic hangout is Casa Gandhi, a serene open-sided wooden shala overlooking a lily pond. You can practice your own meditation and yoga or take part in expert-led sessions. A tempting menu of massage treatments is also on offer at the shala, and, for bungalow guests, on their own private deck.

This low-impact, single-use plastic free hotel is well aware of leaving nothing but a delicate touch on the environment. It’s here you’ll be sipping cocktails from straws made out of bamboo stalk and borrowing refillable metal bottles to take out on day trips. The beach in front of the hotel is cleaned daily and staff volunteer twice monthly to clean up the trails at Cahuita National Park. From day one, Aguas Claras has invested in renewable energy and they use solar panels to heat water. Rubbish is appropriately recycled, food waste is turned into compost and eco-friendly products are used across the board. Clean, creative cuisine is also a big draw. Both restaurants source seasonal produce from local farms and the hotel is a member of Dock to Dish which connects coastal regions to their closest artisanal and sustainable fishing communities. Want to dive deeper into all that’s green and good? Aguas Claras offers complimentary backstage tours so you can see firsthand its considered attitude to a minimal footprint.
