Chiang Rai holidays

This destination

Chiang Rai is the northernmost province of Thailand and is situated on the Kok River basin 416 metres above sea level. It is about 785 kilometres from buzzing Bangkok and makes for a wonderful break from the fast paced bright lights of Bangkok. Mostly mountainous, it reaches the Mae Khong River to the north and borders on both Myanmar and Laos. The town itself is quietb and relaxed and visiting the local hill tribes gives a real insight into the culture of this beautiful region along with the stunning local temples.

Choose from a wide selection of Asia holidays.

Chiang Rai highlights:

•The Princess Mother Hall and Doi Mae Salong are located outside of Chiang Rai and are accessed by a scenic road from Mae Chan. Visit Mae Salong and learn the history of the Kuomintang and their struggle after being exiled.

•Doi Tung Royal Villa is built on a mountain overlooking the surrounding hills and valleys and combines Swiss and Lanna architectural styles. There is also a large garden and memorial hall commemorating the Princess Mother.

Population

12.5% of the population belong to the hill tribes, a collective term for the minority ethnic groups in the North of Thailand such as the Karen, Akha, Lisu, Meo, and Muser. Many Chinese, particularly from Yunnan Province, have migrated to the area and assimilated with the Thai population to such extent that well over half of the large businesses in northern Thailand are owned by people of Chinese heritage.

Area

11,678 square kilometres

Culture

The "WhiteTemple" Wat Rong Khung is unlike any other temple in Thailand. The construction of the temple began in 1998 and has not yet been completed. The filigree decoration on the doors, railings and roof beams is incomparable.

Highlights

In the mountains around Chiang Rai live several hill tribes who are former immigrants from neighbouring countries to Thailand. In some villages Padaung families live, belong to the Karen people. The women of these families are somewhat iconic due to the rings stack around their neck to stretch the neck. The temple Wat Phra Kaeo Don Tao is the archaeological site of the Emerald Buddha, which is admired today in Bangkok at Wat Phra Kaeo temple. The statue is not, however, made of emerald, but jade.

According to official bus schedules, the bus ride to Chiang Rai from Chiang Mai takes approximately an hour and 30 minutes, however the 175 km trip most often takes at least two and a half hours.

Several flights are available to and from Bangkok daily. Chiang Rai International Airport flight time is about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

There is scheduled boat service between Chiang Rai and Thaton in Chiang Mai province daily.

There are currently no rail services to Chiang Rai as the railway line from Bangkok ends at Chiang Mai. There have been talks of extending the rail line from Den Chai to Chiang Rai in the near future[1], but this is unlikely to happen as the city's population is well below 1 million and there isn't as many international tourists visiting Chiang Rai as Chiang Mai.

Eating/Drinking

The cuisine of Northern  Thailand is characterized by different chilli varieties, both in sauces and soups. Sausages and pork are also typical of the region around Chiang Rai. For a typical dinner food is served in numerous small dishes on a special tray, called a "Kantoke", which will be served with sticky rice. Dessert is served after a local cigar.
