My ideal day in Kathmandu is spent amidst the backstreets meeting smiling locals, watching pilgrims adding rhododendron to the already overflowing temples, smelling the courtyards full of drying rice and chillies and frequenting hobbit-sized kitchens for fresh local snacks and ice cold Everest beer."

Kathmandu Snapshot

Assaulted by your senses as you roam the narrow streets, a riot of colour with tradesmen hawking their wares; the relentless horns of passing motorcycles, tuk tuks and taxis; the smell of incense filling the air; dust settling on your skin; the world flashing past you at a staggering pace. Just one moment in the nation’s entrancing capital – overwhelming, spellbinding and truly unforgettable.

Discover the magnificent Himalayas

The spectacular scenery of this mountainous country is truly unmissable. Vibrant capital city Kathmandu lies at the foot of the magnificent Himalayas and you can explore beautiful medieval towns along the sweeping valley.

Nepal has so much to offer intrepid travellers. Wonder at the stunning architecture of ornate temples, take a gentle trek through breathtaking scenery or embark on a thrilling flight over the mountains to spot the majestic Everest. A fascinating tour will give you a broader experience of this ancient kingdom perched on the 'Roof of the World'.

Nepal Holiday Highlights
•   See the remnants of a kingdom at Kathmandu's Durbar Square.
•   Discover the pilgrimage site of Swayambhunath Temple in Kathmandu Valley. Take the steps for a tough climb that leads to a magnificent stupa and fabulous city views.
•   Glimpse an elusive tiger in Chitwan National Park. Nepal’s premier National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site is also home to rare Indian rhinos.
•   Relish your first sight of the mighty Himalayas.
•   Watch the sun set in a haze of colour over Pokhara's Phewa Lake.
•   Visit the beautifully carved rock of Devi’s Falls in Pokhara.

Nepal – The Essentials
•   The traditional greeting is a cheery Nameste as you place your palms together in the prayer position.
•   Wear appropriate clothing when visiting religious sites.
•   Ask permission to enter Hindu temples and don't wear leather.
•   Load shedding is common, which means the electricity supply is rationed through the day. Most hotels have their own generator but the streets can get rather dark at night.

Random Fact
When mountaineer George Mallory was asked in the 1920s why he wanted to climb Everest, he replied: ‘Because it’s there’. This still rings true for many an adventurous soul who you may spot around Kathmandu in March and early April. Since 1953 when Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first set foot on the ‘Roof of the World’ thousands have followed in their footsteps, such as the more than 500 people (including Sherpas) who summated in 2011.
