Bali holidays

This destination

The 'Island of the Gods' is aptly named. Fringed with perfect beaches and colourful coral reefs Bali is a land of stunning natural beauty and friendly people, proud of their ancient culture and traditions.

Bali holiday highlights
• The world-renowned arts centre of Ubud, with a host of galleries and must-see museums, and daily cultural performances.

• Bali Bird Park, home to hundreds of rare and exotic species including bumblebee-sized hummingbirds.

• Maduwe Karang Temple - even in this land of ornately carved temples, this stands alone, decorated with characters from Balinese epics.

• Goa Gajah (the Elephant Cave), one of the island's most mystical and mysterious sites, a monastery carved into the hillside in the 11th Century.

• The peaceful beaches and rolling surf of Ulu Watu.

Culture

The highest mountain of Bali, the sacred 'Gunung Agung', is the seat of Shiva for Hindus and the center of the universe and the center of the system of world harmony. This idea has several implications on the lives of  Balinese, even on the establishment of a room: the bed is always with the head facing the mountain, feet pointing in the opposite

direction.

Highlights

Bali’s capital and largest city is Denpasar, with a population of 300,000. The main street for shops, banks and restaurants is Jalan Gajah Mada. Make a morning trip to the central market, Pasar Badung, to experience the bustle, the colour, and the smells. At the main crossroads in one corner of Puputan Square (named after the 1906 “fight to the death” of the rajas against the Dutch militia), a large statue of a four-faced Hindu god blesses each

direction. The Bali Museum, at another corner of the square, displays the island’s heritage from prehistoric times to the early 20th century. Look out for the jewelled, 15th-century examples of the kris, and the model of a Balinese cremation ceremony. The Arts Centre at Abiankapas, on the Sanur road east of Denpasar, has an

arena for performances and exhibitions.

Beaches

Most of Bali’s beach resorts are close to Denpasar. Kuta, discovered by surfers  in the 1960s, is the brashest, with a noisy night scene centred around  the bars and discos. If swimming, beware of the undertow. The once sleepy village of Jimbaran has become one of the island’s first-class resorts; it is famed for the spectacular sunsets. Nusa  Dua, on theeast coast of the Bukit peninsula, has some of the most luxurious hotels, white beaches and clear waters for all kinds of water sports. Sanur, a short distance southeast of Denpasar, is easily reached by bus and is consequently a favourite with city-dwellers, with plenty of tourist facilities. It was here that the first modern hotel, the 10-storey Bali Beach, was built in the 1960s. The beach is pleasant, but the sea inside the reef is only deep enough for swimming at high tide. The rest of the time time, people stick to hotel pools. Just north of the highrise hotel, the Le Mayeur Museum was the home of a Belgian artist who came to Bali in 1932 and stayed. His paintings cover the walls, many of them celebrating the beauty of Balinese women, including the legong dancer Ni Pollok who became his wife.
