Little Governors'

A traditional tented camp in the heart of the Mara, Little Governors’ is intimate in character, with just 17 luxury en-suite tents tucked around a large watering hole that teems with both birds and wildlife.

Shady forest settings, comfortable tents and expert rangers ensure safari heaven.

The camp is approached by a boat ride across the Mara River, then an escorted walk through the riverine forest.

Little Governors’ has just 17 rooms overlooking a watering hole. Meals are served open air or under canvas tents, and three daily game drives are included.

Accommodation

The 17 rooms at Little Governors’ each have double or twin beds, hot and cold water and showers.

Sustainable Features

•    Governors’ recognises that local people must benefit directly from  tourism, resulting in a 35 year long commitment to local communities  delivering genuine social and conservation results.

•   Governors’  funded the construction of two bio-gas plants in a local village that  use dung from livestock to generate gas for cooking. As a result  deforestation was reduced and woodlands are now regenerating. Collecting  animal waste has also reduced fly numbers and fly-borne diseases and as  bio-gas produces less smoke than wood incidences of respiratory and eye  diseases have also decreased.

•   Governors’ fund an eye clinic complete with operating rooms to help treat common eye diseases.

•   A  ‘zero waste’ policy means that all of the camp’s waste is sorted and  separated then processed for recycling where possible. A programme has  also been initiated to use this recycled paper and cardboard to make  briquettes to fuel the hot water systems.

•   Governors’  funding for local primary schools includes providing uniforms and  paying teachers’ salaries. Funding through secondary school is provided  for some of the most gifted pupils.

•   Governors’  have helped fund construction of classrooms, libraries, bore holes,  water towers and tanks, solar power and water purification facilities in  local schools

Support is provided  for the Narok County Council by supplying equipment and personnel to  help with maintenance of local roads and the airstrip.

•   Governors’  actively re-plants an average of 45 native trees a month to help  replace those lost to natural causes (primarily destructive elephant  grazing).

Facilities

Little Governors’ is scenically set around a watering hole. It has a gift/craft shop, an open bar tent and restaurant tent for candlelit dinners. Breakfast and lunch buffets are served al fresco, and the campfire is lit at sunset. Game viewing is included three times daily, and optional Masai village visits, hot air balloon flights, and light aircraft trips to Lake Victoria can be arranged.

Location

Little Governors’ has a forest settings on the Mara River bank, 45 minutes flight from Nairobi Wilson airport to Musiara airstrip, 15 minutes away by jeep and then accessed via boat across the river.
