Governors' Il Moran

Perfectly placed in an exclusive concession area for fantastic wildlife watching, Governors' Il Moran is a premier tented camp set amidst shady forests, offering a traditional yet luxurious safari in probably the best location in the Maasai Mara. It is just a short drive from the airstrip and nearby big game hotspots include the Paradise Plains and Musiara Marsh, where much of the BBC's 'Big Cat Diary' is filmed.

Cooked breakfasts and lunch buffets are served under giant trees by the river, and waiter-served dinner is by candlelight in the dining tent with complimentary wine. Two game drives daily with superb rangers are included, and dawn balloon safaris and excursions to Lake Victoria are also available (extra charge). There are just ten huge tents, each featuring colonial artefacts and gas lamps to complete a top of the range safari atmosphere.

Sustainable Features

•    Governors’ recognises that local people must benefit directly from  tourism, resulting in a 35 year long commitment to local communities  delivering genuine social and conservation results.

•   Governors’  funded the construction of two bio-gas plants in a local village that  use dung from livestock to generate gas for cooking. As a result  deforestation was reduced and woodlands are now regenerating. Collecting  animal waste has also reduced fly numbers and fly-borne diseases and as  bio-gas produces less smoke than wood incidences of respiratory and eye  diseases have also decreased.

•   Governors’ fund an eye clinic complete with operating rooms to help treat common eye diseases.

•   A  ‘zero waste’ policy means that all of the camp’s waste is sorted and  separated then processed for recycling where possible. A programme has  also been initiated to use this recycled paper and cardboard to make  briquettes to fuel the hot water systems.

•   Governors’  funding for local primary schools includes providing uniforms and  paying teachers’ salaries. Funding through secondary school is provided  for some of the most gifted pupils.

•   Governors’  have helped fund construction of classrooms, libraries, bore holes,  water towers and tanks, solar power and water purification facilities in  local schools

Support is provided  for the Narok County Council by supplying equipment and personnel to  help with maintenance of local roads and the airstrip.

•   Governors’  actively re-plants an average of 45 native trees a month to help  replace those lost to natural causes (primarily destructive elephant  grazing).
