To the north of Cairo, Alexandria is built on the Nile Delta where the fresh waters of the Nile meet the Mediterranean. The gateway to the desert, the northern shores and stunning beaches of Mersa Matruh, Alexandria is home to antiquities from both ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, a fascinating mix from the days of Alexander The Great as well as Cleopatra.

• The second largest city in Egypt, Alexandria is home to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Montazah Palace.

Highlights

• Bibliotheca Alexandrina: A mammoth work in architecture officially opened in 2002 and inspired by the city's ancient library.

• El Alamein: The city gained notoriety on the Mediterranean Sea during the Second World War. Above all, the battles of Field Marshal Rommel and Montgomery went down in history. Today, war graves and cemeteries, monuments are left as reminders to history's events.

• Fort Qaitbay: Originally stood on the site of the famous Pharos lighthouse, which collapsed in the 14th Century following an earthquake. The fortification from the 15th Century, now houses a naval museum.

• Mosque of Abu al-Abbas Al-Mursi: Built in 1943 on the ruins of the old, it is now Alexandria's most beautiful mosque, south of Fort Qaitbay on the Corniche.

• Underwater Museum: Alexandria has fallen since antiquity by 6-8 meters and thus a large part of the city is under water. Take yourself on a diving excursion accompanied archaeological underwater museum in Alexandria.

Beaches

In Alexandria itself, although there are public beaches, these are usually dirty and overcrowded. Tip:

• Mamoura, near Alexandria: A pleasant change, about 1 km away

• Hammock Beach, Porto Marina: Fully equipped - with children's club, horse riding, open-air cinema and much more

• South Beach, Porto Marina: The water sports paradise, banana boats to scuba diving

• Alexandria Sporting Club: built in 1890 built and home to one of the oldest golf courses in Egypt

• Porto Marina Golf Course, Marina: An ingenious combination of Executive and Championship golf course - salt-tolerant Paspalum grass saves fresh water. The practice facilities include a floodlit driving range, lighted with 20 tees and seven target greens. All aspects of the game covers the Academy of basic knowledge about chipping and bunker play, pitching and putting up with course management and etiquette. The site is located 5 km from Porto Marina.
